Chaplain Corner

Thank you brother Michael Turkovitch ,Editor , for the brief and all inclusive June message accompanying my name . Vivat Jesus .I intended to develope my greeting from the expression over my desk printed on a piece of stone that reads A cluttered desk is a sign of genius . Again my eyes presented another hopeful moment that was more than I was able to accomplish .I was reminded that intentions without works are the pathway to destruction or at least to incompletion.
I am very united with the theme of our monthly magazine ,Columbia ,July 2007 . Many lessons for the good of the Order are expressed indicating the ministry of Columbianism .Page 7 presents the article - Freedom Fighters - informing us that the order received the Canterbury Medal from the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty based in Washington D.C. Rick Santorum ,the former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, presented the award to Supreme Knight Carl A.Anderson at ceremonies in New York city . The Canterbury Medal is the Becket Fund's highest honor and is given annually to a public figure who ,according to the award citation, has "resolutely and publicly refused to render unto Caesar that which is God's. The Medal is named for England's Canterbury Cathedral, where St Thomas a Becket (1118 -70 ) was martyred by King Henry II 's men for his defense of religious liberty .The caption ,expressing a thought of our Supreme Knight expresses much of the leadership that I recognize Carl A. Anderson has provided to us. Knights will remain in the forefront of the battle to promote religious freedom and tolerance .
Page 8 presents Beliefs In Action - characteristic moments in the life of our order since our founder began the Knights to promote Catholic citizenship in 1882 through the 20th century and continuing into the 21st century including the concert of Reconciliation financed by the Knights held at the Vatican as Muslim,Jewish and Christian leaders attended .The Concert also commemorated the 25th Anniversary of Pope John Paul II's election .
Page5 -Knights of Columbus News includes Poland Trip Highlights Orders Growth The world premiere of a new choral work dedicated to the Knights of Columbus ,meetings with Church and national leaders and the presentation of council charters to the first six councils in Poland were the highlights of Supreme Knight Carl A.Anderson 's trip there May3-6 .Joining him was Archbishop Henry J. Mansell of Hartford Conn . Three district deputies were installed .There are currently more than 420 polish Knights.
Page 22 appeals to our individual conscience ,an inner voice that summons us to the good. When we train it and follow it,we come closer to fulfilling our call to holiness. The essay is excerpted from a lecture "The Inner Voice That Summons Us to do Good " which Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn of Vienna Austria gave at the Cathedral of Vienna. For many years Cardinal Schoenborn has been known around the world for his role in the dialogue b etween Catholics and non Catholics ,as well as the struggle for greater unity among the C hristian communities. The conscience is God's m essenger in our life .
Our Supreme Chaplin Bishop William E.Lori presents The Pope's Search For Jesus presenting Pope Benedict's first book as Pope ---Jesus of Nazareth . This gives us a glimpse at the Holy Father's prayerful friendship with the Lord as well as his pastoral love . In a sense ,Pope Benedict is doing in a profound way what all of us are called to do on a daily basis " to give an account of the hope that is ours "(1 Peter 3:15 ) in Christ Jesus .
These selections from our July 2007 issue of Columbia magazine are indicative of more that is contained within the pages including the inspirational front and back covers. Finally I happily call to your attention that EWTN television will provide coverage from our order's 125 the Supreme Convention in Nashville ,Tenn Tuesday ,Aug 7th news director Raymond Arroyo will anchor the coverage .Please check local listings for exact broadcast times .

Vivat Jesus

Direct Donations

Worthy Grand Knight

This year the primary beneficiary of the Direct Donation phase of the Charity Drive will be the “Sunrise Fund” at Stony Brook Hospital. This Fund was established as an initiative of dedicated parents to raise awareness about Childhood cancer and to raise funds for specific programs and projects. The “Sunshine Fund enables those caring for our children to establish innovative programs, provide a nurturing environment, develop funds to support research studies and to meet the ever expanding needs of our pediatric patients.
When a child has cancer, it’s not just the child who is affected it’s everyone whose life is touched by that child. So therefore I implore you to join us in this most important segment of this years “Charity Drive”. Your charitable donation goes to help a child in your own community.
Direct donations are an allowable deduction by the Internal Revenue Service and the New York State Games and Wagering Commission. So my brothers if your council runs bingo nights or nights at the races or card parties. You can make a donation to this worth while cause.
The Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook was established to raise awareness about childhood cancer and to raise funds for specific projects including a respite center, a play room, extended support services, facilities and programs that meet the families growing needs, and vital research into the causes and treatment of childhood cancers. The Fund supports a number of special initiatives at Stony Brook University Medical Center and
it ’s pediatric Oncology Program. SBUH’s Pediatric Oncology program is the only pediatric oncology program on Long Island that is tied directly to a major research university. The program includes the only support group east of Manhattan for families of children with cancer. The support group is a vital aspect of patient care, second only to cutting edge treatment, in helping patients and families cope with the stresses of battling cancer. The School Reentry program establishes ongoing communication between young cancer patients and their educators and eases the path when the child returns to the classroom. The Childhood National awareness initiative is vital if we are to raise awareness about childhood cancer not only here on Long Island, but nationally
Brothers we live in a country with a tremendous amount of resources.
But the greatest resources we have are our children.
Your donation may be presented to me at any Chapter Meeting or mailed to me. All checks are payable to “Suffolk Chapter Charities Inc.” Viva Jesus.

A new fraternal year is upon us. Congratulations to the newly elected and appointed council leaders. I’m sure you have a list of things that you want to accomplish during the coming year. I’m eager to help.

One of these goals is likely the attainment of the Star Council award - the most prestigious award the Order offers at the council level. I’m certainly committed to helping on the insurance side, but I’ll be glad to help on the membership side as well.

If you know an eligible Catholic man who might be interested in joining the Order (and who among us doesn’t), he’s probably just waiting to be asked. I can help you, either by approaching him myself, or by “coaching” you – transferring sales skills that you can use to recruit him and other prospects. As always, I’m at your service.

What would be helpful to all of us would be an early start on those goals, rather than waiting until May or June. Let’s get an early start on award season this year.
